Physical preparation
While it is important to underline that your yoga experiences should be enjoyable above all, and that there are very few set rules, there are nevertheless some practical guidelines it’s best to follow.
Always arrive in good time for your class. You don’t want to feel rushed from the start!
Don’t eat too much beforehand, but some food will be helpful to boost your strength.
Remember yoga is barefoot (although there are special yoga socks available if you really feel the need).
Otherwise, wear comfortable but streamlined clothing. It’s probably best to wear layers on top that you can peel away as you heat up.
You can chant if you wish to, but don’t feel that it’s an absolute necessity.
Be prepared for limited personal space if you’re joining a class, although this is less likely if you’re having individual or small group teaching.
Don’t worry if the teacher touches you to adjust your position. If you have a problem with this, let your teacher know politely beforehand.
Know your pain/discomfort threshold and also the difference between the two. Discomfort is part of the process but pain may be dangerous.
Keep your breathing going. (Easy to say, but sometimes hard to do!) Remember breath control is central to yoga.
Let your emotions flow naturally. You will feel some emotions welling inside you sometimes; again, this is part of the process.
Allow plenty of time for relaxation. Don’t be in a rush to get away because the savasana period is vital.
